Professional Experience

Allyson Haynes Stuart is a scholar and practicing attorney focusing on privacy, data security, and e-discovery issues.

Professor Stuart has taught law for eleven years. At the Charleston School of Law, she taught E-Discovery, Information Privacy Law and Internet Law, in addition to a variety of required first-year and upper level courses, including Contracts, Civil Procedure, and Evidence. She taught Internet Law as an adjunct at Brooklyn Law School; taught Comparative Privacy Law (the EU and the US) as an adjunct at the Instituto de Empresa in Madrid, Spain, and Stetson University in Granada, Spain; and taught Comparative Intellectual Property (the EU and the US) at Suffolk University in Madrid, Spain.

Professor Stuart served as Faculty Advisor to the Federal Courts Law Review for 9 years, where she organized, moderated and presented at various symposia including Searching for Data: New Rules and New Tools, Feb. 20, 2015; Technology and the Criminal Justice System, Mar. 28, 2014; Ethics in the E-Discovery Age, Feb. 27, 2009; and Privacy in the Federal Courts, Apr. 11, 2008. Other significant speaking engagements include the Southeastern Association of Law Schools Annual Conference, the NC/SC Labor & Employment Law Conference, the Privacy Law Scholars Conference, and numerous Charleston Law Review Symposia.

Before working in academia, Stuart was in-house counsel for Sony Corporation of America in New York, New York, where she managed litigation, advised senior management, and coordinated privacy compliance and website issues.

Stuart also practiced for six years as an Associate at Cleary, Gottlieb, Steen & Hamilton in New York. There, she represented corporations, international organizations, and individuals in domestic and international litigation and arbitration as well as regulatory investigations. She appeared before federal district and bankruptcy courts, examined and defended fact and expert witnesses, and negotiated and drafted contracts dealing with securities, corporate transactions, intellectual property, products liability, and general commercial law.

Professor Stuart served as Law Clerk for the Honorable David C. Norton, District Court Judge for the District of South Carolina, in Charleston, South Carolina.

Education

Professor Stuart received her J.D. magna cum laude from the University of South Carolina School of Law. She served on the South Carolina Law Review and the Moot Court Board, and was a member of the Order of the Coif and the Order of the Wig and Robe. She received her B.A. from Duke University.
