Self-Assessment Checklists May Help Lawyers in Risk Management

The practice of law is laden with risk.    Ok … yes … we all know that.   The difficult problem that lawyers face is what they can do to reduce risk without devoting so much time to risk management that it interferes with the practice of law.  Technology is the answer.  Right?  Well not exactly.  Technology can increase efficiency in the practice of law but the use of technology itself creates a range of new risks from cloud computing to use of social media.  There are, however, tools that firms can use to identify particular risks that may have developed in their practices.  Once those risks are identified, the firm can then take steps over time to eliminate or reduce risky practices.  For example, the Colorado Supreme Court has issued a Self-Audit Checklist that lawyers can use to identify risky areas of their practice.  http://www.coloradosupremecourt.us/PDF/PMBR/SELF-AUDIT%20CHECKLIST.PDF
